Teaching students to use ArcGIS to analyze geographic-based racial & economic inequities
- Designed and taught an ArcGIS-based social science elective in which 11th and 12th graders used Esri’s ArcGIS (Geographic Information Systems) computer program and Story Maps to map data from the U.S. Census and other data sources to analyze historical and present-day patterns of racial and income inequities in their city or county (“Mapping Inequity in DC”). - Students practiced being social scientists (rather than just learning about the findings of social scientists): they used the scientific method to collect and analyze primary data in order to test original research questions.
